Design Bugs Out: Design Council Unveils New Designs for Hospital Furniture and Equipment

Prototypes of inventive new designs for existing hospital furniture and equipment, designed to help the fight against MRSA and other Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs), will be unveiled today by the Design Council. The prototypes use cutting edge techniques to change the bedside environment, patient transport and everyday medical equipment, making them much easier to clean. They are also designed to affect patient and staff behavior to reduce the likelihood of exposure to HCAIs.

Scholarships for the Master European Design Labs 2010

“IED Master Madrid” is conducting a contest to win a scholarship for the “European Design Labs 2010″. The first prize is a scholarship that covers the full cost of the course fee (15.900 €). Second prize covers 20% of the course fee. To participate in the contest, you must fill in the form and attach your C.V. and motivation letter. You may also want to attach your creative portfolio if you have one. The contest will close on October 13th, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. CET.

Workshop of the European Design Labs with Jane ni Dhulchaointigh

Irish designer Jane ni Dhulchaointigh conducted a workshop for the students of European Design Labs 09 from July 20th to the 23rd, 2009.Jane ní Dhulchaointigh, who invented the material Formerol, leaded the workshop named “Hands On” through which students can discover new perspectives on the creation of concepts, narratives and objects and of course playing with materials with their own hands. The workshop was based on principal which the tutors of this course explained as: “Nowadays we cannot be satisfied with the generic mass-produced objects. In fact, our senses search for raw, ugly, unfamiliar, repaired, used, dirty, unique, rare and strange objects.”

Lucia Grompone and Rafael Zaragoza receive awards

Lucía Grompone and Rafael Zaragoza, designers who are currently finishing their European Design Labs Masters, have each received the much coveted honorable mentions at Premios Injuve a la Creación Joven.
These awards are presented to the most innovative designers with the aim of promoting the work of new artists and creative activities, nurturing the promotion and circulation of their work, as well as their initiation into the professional world.

European Design Labs 09 students enjoyed a workshop at Boisbuchet

Under the title “Back to Basics”, the workshop has been leaded by the designer Gala Fernández and the photographer Héléne Bergaz from August 2nd to August 8th, 2009 in Boisbuchet, France. The participating students investigated about the basics, the indispensable things we carry with us in a case, the ones we deem essential for daily life. After that, they have worked developing one product or service about these elements. With that purpose, all of them have begun with the use of an stenopeic camera, build from cardboard and other simple materials they own. They have also built a giant one.

Design Council to Launch Patient Dignity Competition

The Design Council and the Department of Health are all set to launch on 1 October a new project which will address issues regarding the patient dignity and privacy in hospitals. The Design for Patient Dignity scheme will follow the same constitution as the Design Bugs Out competition launched last year, which saw four designers create five new pieces of hospital furniture to combat the spread of infection.

Design Bridge to Create 21st Century Pint Glass

A safer British pint glass is being developed by the designers aimed at cracking down the problem of glasses being used in violent assaults. The appointed designers, Design Bridge, will work on designing an assortment of safer drinking vessel prototypes, which will be unveiled in December this year. However, the challenge is to not only develop a safer pint glass, but to ensure they are attractive to industry, manufacturers and consumers. Working closely with manufacturers and the drinks trade will help Design Bridge in developing more than one solution, which could be taken up by pub and club owners.
